2020 Toyota 86 Hakone Edition Is Fun To Drive With Excellent Handling

The Toyota 86 Hakone Edition is a sports car with special handling from Toyota and Subaru.

Subaru has BRZ, and Toyota has 86, so they plan to build this car together. We knew it as the Scion FR-S, but the car was gone.

After that, Toyota chose to take the same name that people worldwide used to bring it to the US with this Toyota 86.

So if you want a pure sports car with lightweight, excellent feedback, and handling, this Toyota 86 really has got everything you need.

What makes it even better is paying respect for an extraordinary street in Tokyo, Japan called the Hakone Turnpike. It is a very narrow winding road that, many years ago, people used for their drifting scenes.

So Toyota wants to honor it because these cars will drive light agility to conque the Hakone Turnpike like a champion.

If you need an exceptional sports car that still offers the engagement of a six-speed manual transmission and excellent lightweight, this might be the perfect one to put in your garage.

2020 Toyota Hakone Edition Exterior

emerald metallic green looks fantastic! That's the only color that you could get for Toyota Hakone 86 Edition.

It's literally called Hakone green with the 86 in the BRZ. One revision was made in 2017.

Toyota redid the front fascia, rear part, under the hood, and some of the interior. However, that's the only revision you still have.

The headlight housing has a little bit of chrome trim and the 86 badge on the interior. You got full LED headlights day time running lamps, and turn light.

We really love the shape of the chrome. How it comes to a point on the interior is admirable.

You'll see a little bit of flat black, and you do have exquisite fog lamps. Of course, it will help illuminate all the roads in front of you.

We really love the front end as it looked like a catfish. But you wish 86 Hakone Edition would have bronzed out the front Toyota badge like on the wheels. It's pleasant to have that cohesive impression of it.

You do have flat black and all open functional grill.

You'll love how Toyota takes the lower rear front fascia and extends it out quite sharply. You know that will help the vehicle's downforce and scoop more air toward the head radiator opening.

Also, you'll see two slight indentations that start on the front fascia go into the hood.

The hood is super smooth. On each side, you have a high peak at passenger and driver. That's gonna give you the perfect vantage point as you're going down your favorite twisty or racetrack.

You get the bronze metallic bronze on 17-inch wheel 215 on the width and 45 series sidewall.

But you wish you get the four-piston Brembo calipers with the sack suspension as on the BRZ Performance Pack.

On fender, you have a very tasteful treatment. You'll love the 60 badge that has so much history, and it looks perfect right on the side.

You have a nice color match mirror caps flat black around the window treatment. Also, the roof is one of the best-looking parts. Hakone has two lifted areas on both sides, but the center is a bit lower.

Besides, there's a shark fin antenna.  At the rear tire and wheel and setup, you still have two 215 outback and upfront.

You wish 86 Hakone equipped with Michelin super sport tires. But still, from a look standpoint, you'll love this vehicle.

On the back, you have a new wing with aluminum in the center and color-matched endplates. It's a pedestal-style spoiler on the trunk.

Also, you have a chrome Toyota badge. The updated taillights for 2017 are still the same in 2020.

You get full LED taillights and turn signals. The way they extend out from the vehicle's actual body and then the rear diffuser is excellent.

You have a large exhaust opening, one on each side, which is nice.

The Engine of Hakone 86 Edition Toyota

You have a prop rod under the hood, but it is quite far over the passenger side. You get a flat-4 engine or a boxer engine 2-liter. Also, Toyota has put the design bracing to stiffen up the front end.

Toyota 86 Hakone Edition with 6-speed manual transmission has 205 horsepower.

But if you go automatic transmission, you get 200 horsepower.

Hakone 86 has 156 lb-ft of torque and 0-60 if in around 6.7 seconds. However, the curb weighs very light: 2776 pounds.  MPGs are 24 in the city and 32 on the highway.

There's not a bunch of plastic, and you can see the intake plenum. It has a nice red powder-coated finish.

You know about a flat engine? So when we say boxer means the Pistons are slapping back and forth horizontally.

The engine is relatively low in the chassis that's going to help with handling.

You could even see the transmission butting up against the back of the engine. Toyota also revised the gearing to give you a little quicker acceleration; they do some ECU work.

Toyota 86 Hakone Price

You probably love this special edition of Toyota 86 Hakone. The MSRP is right at around $30,000.

86 Hakone Edition Interior

The door panel has Alcantara materials on top with a lovely touch. At the bottom, you will get some leatherette material with soft stitches.

You have a small pouch and leather where the speaker covers. You don't need a lot of bells and whistles in the interior.

You got Toyota 86 badge and full soft-touch material. You'll love how flat for the most part. It just raises up a little bit for your AC vent.

Toyota 86 Hakone Edition has a 7-inch infotainment system screen. However, you have a dated LED, and it looks like a Casio watch, but it's simple to read.

Also, you have dual climate control. You'll like the toggle switches for the AC and a little tiny storage.

You do have a USB, an aux jack, and a start-stop button nicely placed.

But an excellent slick-shifting 6-speed manual transmission is where the magic happens. It is entirely mechanical, and you'll feel great engagement.

You have the full ability to shut off traction control and go into track mode efficiently with one button.

The heated seats feel great, with the stitch work nicely into the boot and old-fashioned e-brake.

You'll love the two-tone material you still got cup holders.

You have a sliding armrest and plenty of room in center storage, and also a 12-volt.

Absolutely right seats for the money! Two colors with Alcantara and excellent bolstering where you know you'll be sitting comfortably.

You have manual seats for both the passenger and the driver. Even this small car has much headroom to gives you just enough space to put on your helmet.

You have side mirrors, and they're like plastic material. Also, you have vanity mirrors in case you want to look at yourself right before you're about to turn your fast laps.

Behind the Wheel

You have an excellent large door opening, and the manual seat controls really fit your body.

You got four pedals; they are all brushed aluminum dead pedal, clutch, brake, throttle, and heel-toe downshift all day long.

The steering wheel is relatively small and doesn't need to be a flat bottom.

You got the 86 badge flat black on the buttons, and the gauge instrumentation is lovely.

You have a nice white face tach, fuel gauge, and speedometer built through a TFT display on the right.
You could go through different readouts for gauges. Besides, you have an analog speedometer, which is nicely organized.

Cargo Space

We think Toyota Hakone 86 Edition is gonna compete with the Subaru BRZ and the Mazda Miata.

But this car has a concrete roof for security. Also, being a small car, you have plenty of room in the trunk.

The 86 badging with the two-tone color motif is nice. Even you have a spare, so this car isn't cutting all the weight out.

Drive the Toyota 86 Hakone Edition

You'll love the sound of the engine great with good RPM balances and feedback. It really shows us the pure form of what a sports car is.

Hakone 86 Edition may not have 500 horsepower, but it does have an excellent balanced chassis and a smooth-shifting 6-speed manual transmission.

The great induction sound coming from the flat-4 engine. All the little extra touches you get with the Hakone Edition, like the two-tone and interior with the tan and the Alcantara, and the steering is fantastic. Also, having a concrete roof over your head really allows you to have a nice setup.

The brakes are excellent, and you're not worried about losing traction.

If you know how to take turns, brakes, and shift properly, you're gonna have an absolute blast in this car every time you drive it.

You feel like you are in a racing car, and the sound is relatively short. We love this type of car because it is really about the driver, not about how much power you have. The car was first seen in 2013, so seven years of improvements have played a big part in the Toyota 86 Hakone Edition.

You'll love super-smooth clutch feedback and a great throttle response.

But you wish this car had the Performance Pack that you could get on the BRZ  like the sack suspension and the Brembo 4-piston calipers. We think that would even help more in balance and braking. It's so amazing to have a kind of nimbleness, and you feel like you're in a little racecar.

Hopefully, this review will give you a nice view of the Toyota 86 Hakone Edition.

It's such a balanced engaging, fun car to drive, so visceral, but you could enjoy it every single day.
